Symptoms of kidney cancer

Kidney cancer may not cause any signs or symptoms in its early stages. It is usually found incidentally on an ultrasound or x-ray done for another reason. Signs and symptoms often appear as the tumour grows. Other health conditions can cause the same symptoms as kidney cancer.

Some possible signs and symptoms of kidney cancer include:

  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • Low back pain on one side (not caused by injury)
  • A mass (lump) on the side or lower back
  • Swelling of the legs and ankles
  • High blood pressure
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Fever that is not caused by an infection and that doesn’t go away
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count)

Please talk to your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Your doctor will want to know how long and how often you have had these symptoms so that the cause can be found and treated, if needed.
